Embrace Winter's Glow: Nurturing Your Energy Amidst Darker Days

As the days grow shorter and the winter chill sets in, it's common to feel the impact of the season's changes.

If you, like me, struggle with the effects of daylight savings and the darker, colder months, you're not alone.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) can cast a shadow during this time, but there are ways to navigate through it with a more uplifted spirit.

First off, let's explore the signs and symptoms of SAD may include:

  • Feeling listless, sad or down most of the day, nearly every day
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Having low energy and feeling sluggish
  • Having problems with sleeping too much
  • Experiencing carbohydrate cravings, overeating and weight gain
  • Having difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling hopeless, worthless or guilty
  • Having thoughts of not wanting to live

Symptoms specific to winter-onset SAD, sometimes called winter depression, may include:

  • Oversleeping
  • Appetite changes, especially a craving for foods high in carbohydrates
  • Weight gain
  • Tiredness or low energy

Here are some tips to align your energy and keep your spirits high as we venture through these wintry days:

  1. Embrace Daily Meditation: Make meditation a part of your daily routine. Scientifically proven to enhance mindset and energy, meditation aids in reducing depression, regulating the nervous system, processing negative emotions effectively, and clearing toxic energy from within. Create a cozy corner for meditation with warm blankets, crystals, and items that bring you happiness, like photos or a cherished journal. 

  2. Embrace the Outdoors: Despite the cold, try to spend time outdoors when the sun peeks through. Simply being in the sunlight can be grounding, and I always encourage connecting with nature, especially trees. Whether it's a local park, your favorite trail, or simply the trees in your yard, stand near them, touch them, or if you're up for it, share a warm hug. They might just appreciate it too!

  3. Mind Your Energy Intake: Be conscious of what you consume energetically. The content we engage with—what we watch, listen to, and interact with—impacts our mood significantly. Consider shifting from depressing movies or melancholic music to more positive, uplifting choices. And hey, dancing around your house to upbeat music can be a great mood lifter too!

  4. Celebrate Yourself: Take joy in simple activities. Infuse joy into your daily tasks and transform them from chores into moments of delight. When you become more mindful in each moment, they feel less like an overwhelming task, and more like self-care! 

  5. Surround Yourself with Uplifting Souls: Spending time with people who inspire and support you can work wonders for your mood. The company we keep influences our mindset, so seek out those who challenge you to be better, believe in you, and stand by you through thick and thin.
